Safeguarding
We are sure you are aware of the serious information which continues to come to light regarding child abuse in football, and FA Chairman Greg Clarke has recently written an open letter – which is attached to the bottom of this post.
Everybody at Sussex Schools FA are appalled by the horrific abuse suffered by former footballers and our thoughts are with the victims and their families.
In his letter, Greg Clarke asks everyone in football to offer support to anyone who needs it and to encourage anyone with information to contact the Police, The FA or NSPCC.
The FA has set up a helpline in conjunction with the NSPCC which you are encouraged to contact with any information.
· NSPCC 24 hour helpline 0800 023 2642
· Childline 0800 1111
Schools’ football (ESFA) has implemented robust safeguarding procedures that Sussex Schools FA abide by.
All coaching staff have an accepted FA Enhanced Criminal Record Check (DBS) in place.
Every coach involved in the Association must be registered and attached to a team on the ESFA portal.
If a coach is a practising teacher or education services employee and receives regular safeguarding training through their employers, this must be kept up to date. All other coaches must attend the FA’s Safeguarding Workshop which must be renewed every 3 years.
This is an ESFA policy and Associations may face suspension if they are using coaches who have not had the required training and criminal record checks.
Safeguarding Children is a priority for ESFA and we want to make sure everybody knows how to report a concern and who to report it to. A reminder that all ESFA policies in this regard can be found on the website at:
http://www.esfa.co.uk/childwelfare/
Any questions, please contact either of the ESFA National Welfare Officers- Martin Duffield (07852 276416 martin.duffield@schoolsfa.com) or Sarah DaCosta (07960 500723 sarah.dacosta@schoolsfa.com) or Sussex Schools FA Chairman – Ross Maryan (uccrmaryan@uctc.org.uk)
Kindest regards,
Ross Mayan

COVID-19 UPDATE
Sussex Schools FA recognises the concerns of everybody involved in schools and college football.
The health, safety and the wellbeing of all participants and supporters of school / college football is our priority. With this in mind we have made alterations to our planned football activities which are outlined below.
Although this is not a government requirement, Sussex Schools FA feels this is the correct decision under the current situation.

Affiliations 2023 – 2024
Affiliation for the coming season is now open on the database.
To affiliate your teams please log in to the database and enter your teams. Please be reminded that once submitted you cannot do it again so ensure you enter all teams for your school and not just the year you are in charge of. You may need to ‘create’ a team first before being able to enter them if your school hasn’t previously entered in that age category. For example if you want to enter U12 Girls but you have not created that team yet you won’t see U12 Girls as an option. If you have entered at U12 Girls in the past it should already show as an option.
If you are not entering any teams but want to send players to trials then you will need to affiliate for the season by going to this link Affiliate your school – Sussex Schools (sussexschoolsfa.org.uk)
Please ensure that the correct bursar/finance email address is entered on the database when affiliating as they will be automatically sent an invoice and if the details are wrong this often causes delays in payment. If payment is not received by the start of the competitions you will incur a late fee.
You are able to enter more than 1 team in each age group (create an A team and a B team) but please keep in mind that once a player plays for your ‘A’ team they are then cup tied and will not be allowed to play for your ‘B’ team (and Vice Versa). If a school is found to be in breach of this rule then the team will be removed from the competition.
In the U19 Men’s Competitions, 2nd XI teams are able to field a maximum of 2 1st XI players in the league but this is not the case in the cups where players will be cup tied to one team. Any competition rules for next season will be sent out by our new competition secretaries in September when they send out the draws/leagues. This will also be updated on the website/database. Please be aware that it is the schools responsibility to read, understand and adhere to the rules at all times.
A reminder that any requests for extensions or any other competition related queries need to go straight to our competition secretaries.
Ben Andrews U12-16 Comp Sec – u16ssfacomps@gmail.com
Ed Hatton U19 Men’s Comp Sec – u19ssfacomps@gmail.com
Joe McTiffen U19 Women’s Comp Sec – j.mctiffen@bhasvic.ac.uk
We still have a number of roles that we are looking to fill for the coming season so if you are interested please contact me or Ross Maryan rossmaryan1985@gmail.com
The roles are Futsal Development Officer, Sponsorship/Grants Officer, and a website Officer. We are also open to discuss other potential roles that would support us.
These roles might also be good for a college student to gain experience and receive a reference from a county-wide organisation.

Rep Team Trials 2023-2024
This year some of our teams will be running a trial before the summer holidays. This will enable us to have our squads in place in time for the start of the competitions which are starting earlier than they ever have.
Some age groups will of course run their trial in the new year, for example, the U12 age group will trial after the PE staff are able to see the players and identify talented individuals and there is no organised competition at that age group so we have a little more time.
I will be sending an individual email for each team as and when the trials are arranged with an invitation letter that can be printed out for nominated players.
Please note that you will not be able to nominate players until either entering teams into our comps for next year (by logging in and entering teams – this gives you automatic affiliation) or by affiliating for next year only (by going to www.sussexschoolsfa.org.uk/schoolsdb-affiliate-php/ and follow the link.)
Schools who affiliate to SSFA for the season will be able to nominate a MAXIMUM of 3 players per school. Any players who are sent to trial must be of a high level. In districts such as Brighton and Hove or South East Sussex it may be easier to know the rough level as they have fully functioning District rep sides across the ages. It is worth noting that not all district level players will be at County level. If all schools send 3 players just to fill the slots then it makes trials very difficult due to numbers so please be diligent in only sending players that you are certain meet the required level. If you feel you only have 1 then please only send 1.
If you feel there is a good reason for sending more than the maximum of 3 then you will need to email the relevant manager and communicate directly with them. They will not be at liberty to take more than the maximum of 3 unless they deem the evidence sufficient to take further players.
In order to nominate players you will need to log in and go to the ‘nominate players’ tab.
The below is a list of each age and the relevant managers email:
U11 Boys – Position may become vacant, information will be shared soon
U12 Boys – Jason Thornton Jason.thornton@outlook.com
U13 Boys – Jim Colston jimcssfa@gmail.com
U12 Girls – No current manager – looking to appoint
U14 Boys – Steve McGowan smcgowan@stpaulsceacademy.org
U15 Boys – Mark Newnham-Reeve marknrssfa@gmail.com
U14 Girls – Georgia Townsend georgia_townsend11@icloud.com
U16 Boys – Kev Laundon kla@ifieldcc.co.uk
U16 Girls – Gary Hart garyhart78@icloud.com
U19 Men – David Caryer david.caryer@bedes.org

U11 County Representative Side Trials
We are delighted to once again be running trials for our U11 Representative side. These will be on September 30th – it is essential that nominations are done ASAP.
Schools are able to nominate players who are currently playing football at a high standard.
In order to be able to nominate players for trials your school needs to be affiliated to Sussex Schools FA for the season which covers insurance of players that trial but also for successful students for the course of the season.
If you have not already affiliated then please follow this link Sussex Schools Football Association Schools Database :: Affiliate school (sussexschoolsfa.org.uk) and complete the form.
Once your affiliation is confirmed you will be able to log in and nominate players for trials.
